Expired permit

Expired or expiring residence permit: what to do?

All the steps to follow to avoid losing your rights in Italy

When should the residence permit be renewed?
The residence permit must be renewed before it expires. The time limits for submitting the application are:
– Within 90 days before expiration for two-year permits
– Within 60 days for annual permits
– Within 30 days for short-term permits

What happens if the permit has already expired?
If your residence permit has expired and you have not applied for renewal within the set deadlines, you risk becoming undocumented. However, in some justified cases, it is still possible to regularize your status.

What documents are needed for renewal?
In general, the following are required:
– Copy of the expiring permit
– Passport
– Application form
– Receipt of contribution payment
– Documentation justifying your stay (e.g. employment contract, school enrollment, family certificates)

How is the renewal application submitted?
The application can be submitted via the postal kit or directly at the Questura (immigration office). Once you receive the postal receipt, you are considered in compliance while waiting for the new permit.

Can I travel with a permit under renewal?
As a general rule, traveling with only the renewal receipt is not advisable, especially outside the Schengen area. Always check the updated regulations before departing.

What if my renewal is denied?
If the application is rejected, you can file an appeal within the timeframe established by law. It is essential not to wait and to rely on a lawyer.
