Family Reunification

Who can apply and how it works

A complete guide to bringing your loved ones to Italy legally and safely

What is family reunification?
Family reunification is a right established by Italian and European Union law. It allows foreign nationals who are legally residing in Italy to bring certain family members into the country, guaranteeing the right to family unity.

Who can apply?
Anyone who holds a valid residence permit of at least one year for:
– Employment (subordinate or self-employed)
– Asylum or international protection
– Family reasons
– Study or religious reasons (in some cases)

Who can be reunited?
The following family members are eligible for reunification:
– A spouse who is of legal age and not legally separated
– Unmarried minor children (including the spouse’s children)
– Adult children with total disabilities
– Dependent parents, if they have no other children in the country of origin or are over 65 years old

What are the requirements?
To obtain the family reunification authorization (nulla osta), you must demonstrate:
– Availability of suitable housing
– Minimum annual income sufficient to support yourself and your family members
– Legalized and translated civil and family documents

How is the application submitted?
The application must be submitted online through the Ministry of the Interior’s Services Portal. Once the nulla osta is granted, the family member can apply for a visa at the Italian consulate in their country of origin.

How long does it take?
Timelines may vary, but the nulla osta is generally issued within 90 days. The family member may enter Italy with the visa and must apply for a residence permit within 8 days of arrival.

What if the application is denied?
It is possible to file an appeal with the Civil Court. Acting quickly and with proper legal support is essential.
